Under Dark Skies: The Tower Stargazing Experience

Why we build where the stars are brightest — and how each tower is designed for celestial observation.

Every Lookout Tower location is chosen, in part, for its Bortle scale rating — a measure of night sky darkness. Our towers in Sedona and the Olympic Peninsula sit in Bortle Class 2 and 3 zones, offering some of the darkest skies accessible from the continental United States.

Designed for the Night

Each tower includes a rooftop observation platform, a professional-grade telescope, and a curated stargazing guide tailored to the season and location. But the design goes deeper than equipment — the tower itself is engineered to enhance the night sky experience.

All exterior lighting uses warm-spectrum, fully shielded fixtures that cast light downward only — eliminating any contribution to sky glow. Interior lighting can be dimmed to near-zero with a single control, and the observation deck has a dedicated "dark mode" that extinguishes all light sources within a 30-second transition.

The Celestial Calendar

Each tower maintains a celestial calendar that maps the most significant astronomical events visible from that specific location. Meteor showers, planetary conjunctions, lunar eclipses, and seasonal constellation appearances are all catalogued and communicated to guests in advance of their stay.

During the Perseid meteor shower in August, our towers typically reach 100% occupancy weeks in advance. Guests consistently report that watching a meteor shower from an elevated observation platform — surrounded by darkness and silence — is unlike any stargazing experience they've had before.

Dark Sky Advocacy

Our commitment to dark skies extends beyond our own properties. We've partnered with the International Dark-Sky Association to advocate for lighting ordinances in the communities surrounding our towers. In Sedona, our work contributed to the adoption of a comprehensive outdoor lighting code that has measurably improved sky quality across the region.

We believe that access to a dark night sky is a fundamental human experience that's being lost to urbanization. Every tower we build is a small act of preservation — a place where that experience remains intact and accessible.
